Do I Need a Gas Certificate?

Australian law is full of rules and regulations designed to make us safer around the home, covering everything from smoke alarms to fire doors, electrical sockets and drainage.

Most of it is pretty straightforward, but gas fitting on the Sunshine Coast is an aspect that can be confusing.

Do I have to have a gas certificate of compliance when I sell my home? Or is it just when I install a gas appliance?

Can my plumber do it, or does it have to be a gas engineer? For answers to all these questions and more you can read on below.

What is a gas certificate?

A gas certificate is an official recognition that a professional and qualified individual carried out any work done to an appliance connected to the mains gas network.

Gas is a dangerous and unpredictable fuel to work with; there can be bad consequences if gas appliances aren't fitted properly from installation.

So, these certificates exist to ensure that the work has been done correctly. You'll need one whenever work is carried out to an appliance connected to the gas main, whether that's replacing an existing one or setting up a new connection.

Who can give me a gas certificate?

While there are dedicated gas engineers out there, anybody trained, qualified, licensed and registered to work with gas can provide you with a certificate.

The trained professional will likely fit the appliance and then return to conduct a thorough check and to ensure that everything is working as it should be before the appliance is used.

 What does it look like?

The actual appearance of the certificate, badge or plate that you get as a result of gas certification depends on the state that you live in, and not all of them are the same.

In some states, it's a paper document; in some, it's a plaque or plate attached to the appliance, and in others, it's a badge.

These are worth keeping near the appliance because gas companies aren't allowed to supply homes that don't have a valid gas certification.

You'll also find it much harder to sell your house if you don't have a gas certification because it will then become an issue to be addressed in the purchasing process.

 Are there any exceptions?

All gas fitting in Australia requires a certification, there are no exceptions possible.

However, there is a difference between a gas certificate of compliance and a gas inspection.

While a certificate of compliance is for homes connected to the grid, an inspection is for devices that use tanked or bottled gas instead.

These are different certifications and aren't interchangeable, and some people will need both if they use both types of gas.
