What is a Gas Certificate?

If you have gas appliances in your home or business, you need to ensure they are working properly.

Faulty gas appliances can cause an explosion and release toxic Co2 emissions which if left unchecked can be fatal.

For this reason, all gas appliances in your home should be installed by a qualified gas fitters on the Sunshine Coast. And once installed they should be tested to ensure there are no faults.

Once this test is complete you will be issued with a gas compliance certificate.

Are gas compliance certificates compulsory?

The short answer is YES. All gas appliances installed in Australian homes or businesses which are connected to the gas network require a gas certificate.

The certificate should be issued by a qualified gas fitter and show the date of installation.

You will require a gas certificate for the following installations:

When your home is connected to the gas network

When a new gas pipe is installed

When a new gas appliance is installed

When a gas appliance is replaced

Note: homes which use LPG or bottled gas will need to obtain a gas certificate of inspection in place of a gas compliance certificate.

Why are gas certificates important?

Safety

Having your gas appliances tested and certified by a qualified plumber or gas fitter ensures they are working safely. This reduces the risk of explosion and ensures no harmful Co2 emissions are being released inside the property.

Improved reliability

Getting appliances checked regularly also improves system reliability. Your plumber will be able to identify any defects in the system which may cause issues in the future.

These can then be fixed at a convenient time, rather than paying for an emergency call-out.

Who issues gas compliance certificates?

A gas compliance certificate can only be issued by a qualified plumber or certified gas fitter. The certificate will be issued upon completion of the work, usually within 30 days.

If you have not received your certificate after this time, contact your plumber.

Some plumbers will also install a gas plate close to your gas/electric meter. This is stamped with the license number of the gas fitter, the date of installation and the reference number of the certificate.

How frequently should gas appliances be checked?

While there is no legal requirement to have your gas appliances checked regularly, it is recommended that they are checked every 3-5 years. Inspections don’t take very long and will give you peace of mind that your appliances are working safely.

Is a gas certificate of inspection the same as a gas compliance certificate?

The short answer is NO. While they are similar, a gas compliance certificate is required when a new gas appliance is installed in a property which is connected to the gas network.

Homes which use LPG or bottled gas require a certificate of inspection. Both can only be issued by a qualified gas fitter/plumber.
